How does the displacement of an object or image alter its status and the conditions in which it is read?
Company brings together drawings, sculptures, objects and editions around processes of reuse, assembly and shifts in context. The works draw on pre-existing forms, retaining some of their characteristics while altering their function or mode of presentation.
Since 2021, the former ballroom of the Café des Glaces has hosted exhibitions. A scenographic structure organises the display and circulation within the space. It consists of cardboard walls set back from the existing walls, with their joints left visible. It borrows an element of the façade of Robert Venturi’s Guild House and articulates supports, openings and exhibition surfaces. It creates relationships of proximity and framing between the works while leaving the existing architecture visible.
The works are arranged around the perimeter, between wall-mounted displays, projecting fixtures and presentation on integrated shelves. Variations in format and relief give rhythm to their proximity, while the openings bring the existing architecture into the field of the exhibition. The open centre allows visitors to move in both directions and alternate between close observation and an overall view. Freely referencing Complexity and Contradiction in Architecture, Company brings together forms whose uses and meanings overlap: filing objects transformed into small architectures, displaced images, and walls that both display and reveal what lies beyond them.
