Mathis Collins (b. 1986, Paris) is a French and Canadian artist best known for his intricate carved-wood bas-reliefs that stage and reconsider the types, tropes, and clichés of the 18th and 19th century Parisian avant-gardes. Drawing on a characteristically French tradition of satirical illustration and grotesque slap-stick humor, Collins renders his subjects in such a way as to throw light on atavistic aspects of contemporary artistic politics and the figure of the artist constructed thereby.
“Bar None” is Collins’s first solo exhibition in the US. He is represented by Galerie Crèvecoeur (Paris) and has exhibited in numerous galleries and institutions around the world including: Palais de Tokyo (Paris), Musee d’art moderne (Paris), Shoot the Lobster (L.A), Freedman Fitzpatrick (Paris), K11 (Hong-Kong), Longtang (Zürich).
