Feuilleton is pleased to present Los Angeles-based painter Alex Olson’s first show of works on paper.
Contrary to the exacting painting practice for which she is known, Olson’s works on paper are governed by their own unruly logic. The works presented here were completed in 2019 and 2020, but when they began is unknown. Some have been hanging around the studio for several years. They are on their own timeline, blissfully ignorant of deadlines. They arrive when they arrive. While in progress, they live with many others on the studio floor, gathering marks, ideas, tests, and accidents, without judgment. They are often double sided, their orientations shift frequently. They get stepped on. They get layered and built and scraped and smushed. They aid Olson’s primary painting practice but aren’t studies. Unfaithful to a singular identity, instead they report on several simultaneously. Olson considers them to be like a diary, certain feuilles (pages) of which get to go out into the world, with a suggested front and direction for reading.
Alex Olson was born in Boston, Massachusetts, and she lives and works in Los Angeles, California. She received her MFA from California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) and BA from Harvard University. Her works are included in the permanent collections of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Hammer Museum, Los Angeles, Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, Dallas Museum of Art, and Walker Art Center, Minneapolis. Her works have been featured in exhibitions at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Hammer Museum, Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, Walker Art Center, and University of Michigan Museum of Art, among many other venues including Park View / Paul Soto, Los Angeles; Altman Siegel Gallery, San Francisco; Shane Campbell Gallery, Chicago; Laura Bartlett Gallery, London; and 12.26, Dallas. Her work will be included in la mer imaginaire, curated by Chris Sharp, at the Fondation Carmignac in France later this year.
Feuilleton is a domestic gallery space dedicated to showing works on paper. Currently open only by appointment, the exhibitions can be visited online at Feuilleton’s website and Instagram.
