Every loss populates the living world with stand-ins.
Thus, in the case of disappearance, one supplies plot lines, characters, narrative geometries, to control the unruly texture of a sudden absence.
In 1284, a population of children vanished in the city of Hamelin, in Lower Saxony. This really happened!
(Here’s another story: somewhere in what is now the Northern District of Israel, a man in his mid-thirties disappeared from an enclosure in a tomb, setting into motion over 2,000 years of widespread and organized speculation.)
What is a hole? It’s defined only by the matter that encloses it. One can really only point to something that’s missing!
