SCHLOSS is pleased to present the first duo exhibition in Norway of the Californian artists Liz Craft and Pentti Monkkonen. For “Love Streams”, Craft and Monkkonen present a two person installation composed of three silkscreened paintings of the facades of buildings and a bronze sculpture of a penis with a fishing net attached to it.
The gallery space is converted to a scaled down town square with the penis as a
monument or fountain in the center. We are presented with a theatrical staging of a psychedelic city, where its formal qualities are perceived disassociated from their function. Craft and Monkkonen present the outcomes of aimless walks through unfamiliar cities in the practice Debord describes in his Theory of Derive:
drop their relations, their work and leisure activities, and all their other usual motives for movement and action, and let themselves be drawn by the attractions of the terrain and the encounters they find there
Liz Craft’s (*1970) artworks have been included in the 2004 Whitney Biennial and presented by Los Angeles Nomadic Division, and her sculptures have shown in exhibitions at the Migros Museum, Zurich. Recent solo shows include «Blow Me» at Real Fine Arts, NY, «Big Girls» at Truth and Consequences, Geneva, and «The Secret Lives of Spiders» at Jenny’s, LA. Pentti Monkkonen’s (1975*) artworks have shown at the Hammer Museum, LA, Hacienda, Zurich, and New Jerseyy, Basel. Recent solo shows include «Plattenbau» at Truth and Consequences, Geneva and «Mur Murs» at Jenny’s, LA. Craft and Monkkonen are cofounders of the art space Paradise Garage (2012-2015) and the art fair Paramount Ranch. Originally based in Los Angeles, Craft and Monkkonen recently relocated to Germany, and lives and works in Berlin.
