Kyvèli Zoi (b. 1993 in Athens, Greece) is a painter and multidisciplinary artist currently living and working in Athens, Greece. She completed her BFA at the School of Visual Arts New York City (USA, 2016), after attending classes at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts (Paris, 2014) and Central St. Martin’s College of Art and Design (London, 2011-12).
In her practice, Kyveli questions and revisits the notions of chance, individuality, identity, personality, communication, tradition and evolution. All the different characters, cultures and details of people, are points of inspiration which are represented by a variety of forms, patterns, textures or emphases on gestures and symbols. In her painting she is interested in creating situations, and forming mysteries of visual language, by paying homage to the importance of human conditions such as: crisis, time, fate, as well as faith and spiritual and existential questioning. Kyveli’s paintings aim to portray a stylized mise en scene, while using theatricality and cinematic compositional angles to focus on story telling

She only touches light
between breaths, between fingers
while waiting for the events to come.
Her form of waiting is not passive. Think of it like rehearsing preparedness.

She only touches light
between breaths, between fingers
while waiting for the events to come.
The flame has burned her edges and her form of waiting looks like a protest now.
—–
She only touches light
between long breaths, between fingers
while waiting for the events to come.
She lets some fires walk over her back
spread onto the table cloth.

Tips delicately touching each other. Golden flares reflect some interlocutor’s shadow.
Her chest stretches. Sometimes it expands drastically to fill in with the breath of the given room.
The cavity of her chest not only measures time but also space. When it gets too much to hold she begins a series of movements to release air. It’s that ritual that looks like waiting.
