Park View / Paul Soto is pleased to present a solo project by J. Parker Valentine entitled Year of the Sphere.

Parker Valentine’s marks and gestures appear to chase a subject without indicating any point of origin nor any stable object of meaning. Her works and installations exist within a limitless ecology of line, contour, form, shadow, shape, positive and negative space, and gravity. These constituent parts are all grounded by the principal activity of drawing. Elusive and unnameable, her work presents itself as a resistant activity: re-sistant to language and to form while also recognizing their place and use within reality.

Her new canvases have been torn, rearranged, and re-sewn by hand. Overlapping stretches of fabric produce new compositional relationships and obscure others, effecting a material vitality and liveliness in which the canvases behave like charged energetic fields, with agency all their own. Circular forms swerve in and out of pictorial space, spiraling with depth while simultaneously skidding along the works’ physical surfaces, seem-ing to leave behind residue. Draped on the walls the works are also stationary, almost lifeless. Having come to a physical standstill, the canvases paradoxically project an air of cool testimony, calmly reporting on a private event.

Parker Valentine is an artist based in Los Angeles. Her works have been exhibited at Krieg, Hasselt, Belgium; Galerie Max Mayer, Dusseldorf; Barbara Gladstone Gallery, Brussels; The Juan & Patricia Vergez Collection, Buenos Aires; Park View/Paul Soto, Los Angeles; Langen Foundation, Neuss, Germany; Museum of Contempo-rary Art Detroit; 1857, Oslo; Misako & Rosen, Tokyo; Peep-Hole, Milan; Artpace, San Antonio; Museo Marino Marini, Florence; Austin Museum of Art; and Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis, among others.
