Gyan Panchal’s sculptures take shape from objects gleaned from the roadside; found objects (a sandbox, an awning, a lock…) discarded because they are obsolete and whose function, suspended midway, still evokes human relationships, our engagement with others and with the outside world. Like a rag-and-bone man, the artist collects them in his studio and, with careful gestures, often reduced to their simplest expression (washing, cutting, sanding, assembling, staining…), he accompanies these objects to the threshold of themselves. Transformed into sculptures, these altered forms are returned to the world; forms in negotiation with their newfound exposure.
