In Casual Orientation Bible’s space is transformed from a dark dungeon basement into a kaleidoscopic padded room-cum-elevator paneled with tautly stretched and brightly colored vinyl quilts made of randomly dispersed colors arranged in the traditional quilt pattern Gentleman’s Fancy. Tracing their edges around the pipes and beams of the building, so visible in the gallery’s setting, the quilts record the limits of the space as they cling to and mask the walls. The random composition of colors across the rigid geometry of the quilt pattern dissolves into tonal static as the eye searches to find order in a field from which order has been eradicated.
