at SUNSET is a Scheveningen based art space which shares its space with a shifting selection of national and international artist-run spaces. at SUNSET is a non-regular initiative that seeks to create dialogue, exchange and connection with a focus on the process with artist. Sunday Morning Painters Club reveals conversations between painters and paintings on a quiet Sunday morning.

Evi Vingerling (b. 1979) is an artist engaged with rendering the conflicted history of art with her own embodied experience. Primarily working as a painter, Vingerling’s lush and sumptuous paintings seek to map a space for the creation of a culturally located alphabet—an index of how to read an art history from and through her own worldview. Here, Evi’s lived traumas unfurl, in the abstract, as a distinct set of codified languages entirely her own. Marks at once redolent of something ancient as they are hyper-contemporary, effloresce. They are, as Vingerling attests, her “physical manifestation of love and nature; the experience of negotiating ideas and emotional response.” Her paintings are constructed by applying silica gouache in very thin layers creating a finely colored translucent surface—each painting comes alive differently contingent on its context.

“The lack of hierarchy between forms, ideas, and emotions made possible by the materiality of paint is what I love to swim around in. Like the sunlight through the kitchen window warming the back of my legs, like my daughter’s arms, and the breeze in the treetops, and ideas of existentialism become images imbued with “abstract emotion”. The ideas for my paintings take many years to be distilled but might unfold into life in the space of a single morning. There is always a coming together between form and a set of ideas and feelings that informs how I make my paintings.” Evi Vingerling Edited by O. Kholeif
