David Petersen Gallery is pleased to announce Arid Bouquets: Intraction #4, a two-person exhibition by New York based artists Rochelle Goldberg and Dustin Hodges.
Goldberg initiates a rapid growth system of vital foliage and ceramic excretions. Bearing the mark of synthetic serpent to further ask why dress up in another species’s clothes and flaunt their surface in a world that will soon eclipse them? As the chia grow towards sudden waste and short-lived future, the seductive surface is disavowed. A virtual turbine with no central support dislocates an otherwise aerial format, reframing this ongoing terrain as if it would collapse in its own reflection.
Hodges will present a series of ten works on paper – stills for a shot-for-shot remake of Countervailing Blackmails, a c.1987 didactic film that made a profound impact on the artist as a young child. The half-misremembered film purports to correlate phenomena as disparate as interstate traffic patterns, inter-imperialist rivalries, fungal and hepatic reproductive cycles, statistical interleavings, household stain removal, and coniferous pollen dispersal mapping with results both disturbing and banal.
The sordid endeavors of Goldberg and Hodges collapse into multiple but intersecting lines of inquiry, here traced through the active interaction of the intraction: a perceptual framework bracketing ongoing chains of signification, this temporary halting, the action between acts, is also known as exhibition.
