Beginning March 13th, the gallery is excited to inaugurate its new Tribeca location with Andrea Fourchy’s second solo exhibition, “Girlfriends”.

Over the course of a series of canvases cascaded throughout the gallery, a constellation of easily identifiable figures repeats and recurs. Portraits of Charlotte Rampling, Isabelle Hupert, Divine, Charlotte Gainsbourg, and Anjelica Huston array throughout space with the cadence of a film strip or a music video.

In conversation with one another and with a host of familiar art-historical motifs, the figures appear with the naive airs of teenage band posters, and experiment with the shifting register of drag. The use of these figures as a leitmotif questions the way the painter presents and re-presents herself through painting. #oth drawing from and ironizing the bravado presentations of Pop, while historically liberated from the confines of that specific style, the works present an a-historical, playful, and defiant identity.

Andrea Fourchy (B. 1990) lives and works in New York. She graduated from UC Davis in 2012. This is her second solo exhibition at Lomex. She has participated in group exhibitions at Doyers Street, New York; Greene Naftali, New York; Maria Bernheim, Zurich; Svetlana, New York, Gaudel de Stampa, Paris, among others, and had a two person exhibition with Sergej Jensen at Avlskarl, Copenhagen (2016).

SCENE:

ANJELICA HUSTON : “Rather than go from one life to another, I think I live a lot of lives at the same time. I’ve done that ever since I was a child. It seemed that I was inhabited by some B movie.”

CHARLOTTE RAMPLING: “Ever since I was a small child, I’ve had this feeling – it’s in my nature, and so it’s not even pretentious – that if everyone’s going one way, I will go the other, just by some kind of spirit of defiance.”

ISABELLE HUBERT:“I like to take these unusual characters and then make them as normal as possible, because we all know that the tragedy and the abnormal always hides itself behind the normal.”

SCENE:

DIVINE: “I’m not a drag queen. I’m a character actor. I never set out in the beginning of my career just to play female roles. But, fortunately or unfortunately for me, they were the only things that were offered.”

CHARLOTTE GAINSBOURG: “You think that being a girl is degrading, but secretly, you’d love to know what it’s like, wouldn’t you?”

AH: “I’m fond of doing movies where men fight over me. I don’t get to do that enough.”

D: “I’ve always had very macho taste in movies.” SCENE:

AH: “The nature of acting is that one is many characters and jumps from one skin to another as a way of life. Sometimes it’s hard to know exactly what all of your characters think at the same time. Sometimes one of my characters overrules one of my other characters. I’m trying to get them all to harmonize. It’s a hell of a job.”

IH:“I think being an actress is more how to cope with the fact that you can’t do anything else than to express a talent. It’s a way of being untalented for anything”

CR:“You cannot watch yourself dispassionately.”

CR:“One mysterious person looking at another mysterious person equals what? Another mystery.”
