Yesterday, Alice came to work with three different cakes : a fruit cake, a carrot cake and a chocolate cake with icing. They were for her son’s birthday. The chocolate one was shaped like a bicycle, because her son is a fan of the Tour de France. At his birthday party, in spite of all the work she had put into it, the children had not managed to recognize what the cake represented and especially they hardly ate it. So as not to waste any cake, she decided to bring all the leftovers to work and put them on a table in the back of our meeting room. Throughout the morning, the museum team performed a strange ballet, discreetly crossing the offices toward the back of the room to go eat a piece of cake.  What were supposed to be birthday cakes ended their short lived lives in the stomachs of municipal employees. Sometimes what we think of as “The” moment cannot be, and was to be celebrated ends up elsewhere.
