For the group game known as Telephone, all participants form a circle. The first person thinks of a sentence and whispers it in the ear of the person next to them. They then formulate an intelligible sentence from what may have only been partially understood and pass it on to the person next to them. It works like this for everyone in the game. Parts of the original message remain intact, while others are left out or changed. Bernhard Hegglin’s work is often based on various forms of knowledge organization and transmission: narrational, algorithmic, personal memory, mnemonic, educational. Transmission is not without a hitch: slips of the tongue creep in, tiny insults or flatteries are exchanged, parts rephrased. Do you know this joke? How did it go again?
FEAR FIVE SIX is a solo exhibition by Bernhard Hegglin comprising old, rearranged, and new works. What relationship do serially produced objects, materials, or narratives have to time? Bernhard Hegglin’s works address this idea while generating new narratives and connections between themselves and their surroundings. In the exhibition space, they question our expectations regarding units of time and continuity: exhibition biography, career, childhood, narration…
