VIE D’ANGE is pleased to present Wst Sd Clb, a solo exhibition of new work by New York based sculptor Carlos Reyes with collaborations from Max Stolkin.
Blown glass vessels on felt hats sit upon slatted drywall partitions as they gravitate low to the floor of the room. Through vocal chords, the flight paths of birds, and ruminations on steam, passageways of air become recurring entry points into Reyes’ installation.
Wst Sd Clb continues Reyes’ work with cedar sauna panels from a Manhattan men’s club which he repurposed towards a sculptural body of work for his solo exhibition titled ‘West Side Club’ at Bodega earlier in 2018. The panels presented an accumulation of engravings and scratches from the patrons of the men’s club, leaving names, dates and messages intimately and anonymously embedded into their surface.
For Wst Sd Clb, the typography from the sauna has been rematerialized in collaboration with Max Stolkin towards a list of invasive/non-native bird species applied to the gallery walls. Stolkin’s exhibition checklist eschews convention of listing materials and dimensions in favour of a set of psychological narratives to describe the material quality of the artworks (see checklist attached). In Wst Sd Clb; A’s, E’s, I’s, O’s ,U’s and Y’s from the names of Rare/Accidental birds of the Birds Checklist of Montréal (Avibase Bird Checklists of the World, Denis Lepage 2018), consonants are absent while the vowels are physicalized and pronounced as a raised wall treatment made with spray mud and gloss that envelops the room as an atmospheric script.
About the artist:
Carlos Reyes received his MFA from New York University in 2011. Institutional exhibitions include White Flag Projects, St. Louis, MO; the CCS Hessel Museum of Art, Annandale-on-Hudson, NY; and Futura Center for Contemporary Art, Prague. Gallery exhibitions include Galerie Joseph Tang, Paris; Arcadia Missa, London; Bortolami, New York, NY; Croy Nielsen, Berlin; Jan Kaps, Cologne; and Tanya Leighton, Berlin. He is represented by Bodega in New York City. His presentation with VIE D’ANGE marks first solo exhibition in Canada.
