Entrée is pleased to present our second exhibition with Yafei Qi. Fragments of Change offers a delicate yet powerful reflection on the complexities of life, inviting us to consider our own journeys and the interconnectedness of our emotional and physical worlds. Qi’s new body of work consists of a series of striking oil paintings on canvas. There is something incredibly raw and vulnerable in the way the artworks unfold. They are a direct reflection of the artist’s own experience, yet they resonate with universal questions about identity, change, and the passage of time.
Through her meticulous brushwork, Qi captures moments of stillness and quiet beauty, while also highlighting the underlying vulnerabilities of both the natural world and the human experience. At the heart of Fragments of Change are themes of personal transformation, particularly motherhood, and the psychological and emotional shifts that accompany such monumental life changes. Qi reflects on the responsibilities and joys of parenting, while also addressing the more complex mental and emotional challenges tied to these experiences. Her work offers a window into her own journey, capturing the universal, yet deeply personal, challenges of growing and changing as an individual within a family.
Yafei Qi has often used her own life and the lives of those closest to her as subjects in her work, employing a blend of autobiographical and fictional narratives to examine the human condition. She has explored themes of gender, identity, and the generational shifts in Chinese society, particularly the evolving roles of women in modern China. Her work blends the cultural complexities of the East and West, exploring the impact of globalization, postmodern shifts, and the evolving boundaries between individuality and collectivity. Yafei Qi (b. 1987, China) is based in Oslo, Norway. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Film and Video Art from the Beijing Central Academy of Fine Arts and a Master’s degree in Art from the Bergen Academy of Art and Design. She works in a variety of mediums, including photography, film, drawing, and painting.
