Afternoon Projects is thrilled to present What I felt for you was love, a group exhibition featuring work from Qian Cheng, Jonathan Xue, Sofia Yao and Caroline Zhang. This group exhibition showcases a collection of painting and drawing work centred around intimate experiences formed by feelings of understanding, hoping, and believing, not out of conviction, but from lived experience.
Artis Bio
Qian Cheng is an artist and organizer interested in drawing and collaborative artistic interventions that provide generative solutions and perspectives, guided by her lived experience as a first-generation Chinese Canadian. She is a founding member of This Useful Time Machine, a collective that uses performance and lived experience to unpack difficult scenarios within cultural institutions. Her work has been included in group and solo exhibitions at Dreams Comma Delta, Ladner (2022); The New Gallery, Calgary (2021); Surrey Art Gallery, Surrey (2021). Additional projects include nap gallery (2022) in collaboration with Afternoon Projects; and Let’s Be Mutuals (2020), resulting from a Research Fellowship at Mountain Standard Time Performative Arts.
Caroline Zhang (b. 2002, Ohio, USA) is currently a student studying Painting at the Rhode Island School of Design and Applied Mathematics and Computer Science at Brown University. She grew up in Missouri and North Carolina.
Yao Mou In is an artist born in Macau and have lived in both the United Kingdom and the United States. She studied Studio Art in New York University from 2019-2020 and transferred to Rhode Island School of Design a year after, and completed her Painting BFA programme in 2023. She has joined exhibitions in both Macau and the United States, including Macau New Woman Contemporary Art Exhibition (2019) and Art Macao: Macao International Art Biennale (2021).
Jonathan Xue (b. 2000, San Jose, California) is an artist and designer living and working in Philadelphia, PA. They grew up splitting time between Shanghai and San Jose, and are currently completing their degree in Fine Arts at the University of Pennsylvania.
