For the opening of his new gallery space in Duesseldorf, Markus Lüttgen is delighted to announce the second solo exhibition of Tristan Wilczek.
Consisting of four works, Wilczek’s reduced presentation focusses the analysis of a complex and multilayered idea of a physical, synthetic and motive based space that is echoed in his paintings. The painted surfaces connect with the circled or edged areas of the motives in several referential layers and investigate a space that only exists as a conceptual idea. At the same time, the introduced spatial metaphors byWilczeks emerge into linguistically labeled motives, that signify the concepts of room and space as an elusive and dubious entity. Words like “place”, or “thing” are left undefined and introduce the several linguistic levels of the painting that remain paradoxical. Similar to a phenomenological analysis, the paintings question the concept of a painted and imagined space anew and shift the need for a final definition into the levels of linguistic signifiers.
Likewise, Wilczek employs color as pure subject of language. The latter, evolves into an instrument, that uses color as a mere resource to visualize the phenomena of a self-referential linguistic designation. A moment, in which the applied color refers tautological and recursive to the space and it’s defining structures. The space drawn by Wilczek eventually remains unexplained and echoes T.S. Eliot’s question: “What place, what land is this, what kingdom, what area of the world”?
