Carl & Sloan Contemporary is pleased to announce Tiffany Calvert’s first solo exhibition in Portland, Oregon.
As our knowledge of history and culture expands, time is being further and further compressed into one singular existence. The time of timelessness.
Tiffany Calvert’s paintings decipher this moment which isn’t a moment at all. She fuses images from art history and contemporary times that exemplify various types of excess. Utilizing them for their amounts of theatricality, presence and relevance, regardless of context or time. This creates an anachronistic melting pot where mixing all of the world’s images together no longer feels foreign.
However, not all the visual information is there. The paintings are filled with gestural marks, open fields and unrecognizable masses. The specificity of the subject is either not yet resolved or seems to have just fallen apart. This leaves only the subject’s energy rendered, left forever hanging in a perpetually atemporal space of pre- or post-existence.
Tiffany Calvert‘s work has been exhibited in group and solo exhibitions including Lawrimore Project in Seattle, Visual Arts Gallery at SVA New York, and The Lab in San Francisco. She has been a recipient of a Geraldine R. Dodge Fellowship and residencies at the ArtOmi International Arts Center (NY) and Djerassi Resident Artists Program (CA). In 2010 she was awarded a Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant. After living in San Francisco, Chicago and Brooklyn, she is currently Visiting Assistant Professor of Art at Reed College in Portland, OR for 2014-2015.
