Page Not Found opens its doors to A mouthful of Palestine / لقمة فلسطين by Susanne Khalil Yusef: a Palestinian artist based in the Netherlands. It marks Yusef’s first solo exhibition in The Hague.

Susanne Khalil Yusef’s multidisciplinary practice is deeply intertwined with her personal history. Born in Germany into a family of Palestinian refugees who were violently displaced from their home in Jaffa by settlers from across Europe. She experienced a nomadic childhood across Europe before acquiring Dutch citizenship at age 25. Her practice spans sculpture, mural painting, video and ceramics. Yusef’s work navigates questions of exile, belonging and the generational weight of displacement. The artist does this with a visual language that is as vibrant and immediate as it is politically urgent.

Yusef’s work seems light-footed; its vivid, high-contrast environments invite the viewer to look closer at the urgent themes of exile, autonomy, and generations of displacement through settler-colonialism. This is reflected in her series of Root Pusher sculptures, whose outstretched arms attempt to take root in unknown soil. Yusef regularly invites persons from various disciplines who inspire her work — including spoken-word artists, scientists, writers, and musicians — to perform or speak within her installations.

Yusef earned her Bachelor and Master of Fine Art degrees from the St. Joost academy. In 2014, she spent a semester at the International Academy of Art Palestine in Ramallah, which shaped her artistic vocabulary.

Yusef was a resident at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam from 2022 to 2024, where she focused on sculptures for public space. Her work has been included in the collections of, among others, the Amsterdam Museum, Centraal Museum Utrecht, Stedelijk Museum Schiedam, De Nederlandsche Bank, and the Rosewood Hotel in Amsterdam.

A mouthful of Palestine / لقمة فلسطين continues Page Not Found’s ongoing commitment to artistic practices that confront colonialism, displacement, cultural erasure and the politics of memory. Presented as part of “Monograph”, our multi-year cycle of solo exhibitions dedicated to artists whose practices engage archival and publishing methodologies, the exhibition brings these concerns into dialogue with questions of exile, belonging, and intergenerational memory.
