Nicelle Beauchene is pleased to present a solo exhibition of recent paintings by Shana Sharp at Third Floor. Still Life will be her first solo exhibition in the United States.
Utilizing oil and acrylic paint in her intimately scaled works, the self-taught painter works most often from photographs which she takes herself. With attention to light and subtle variations in color, many of the paintings in Still Life feature close crops of local flora from Northern California and the artist’s travels. Prickly pear cacti bloom, pink magnolia blossoms unfurl, tulip petals apex to expose stark black filaments.
In the realist tradition of Fairfield Porter and Lois Dodd, Sharp paints the world around her—finding beauty in the casual domesticity of backyard plants, tableaus with vases filled with flowers, or ripening bowls of fruit. Her subject matter is consistently her surroundings; her paintings depict lush verdant landscapes and contemplative interior scenes, which in turn present a life attuned to the beauty of the everyday.
Shana Sharp (b.1953) lives and works in Sonoma, California. Her first solo exhibition was held at Lulu, Mexico City, Mexico in 2018. Her work is currently included in City Prince/ess at the Palais de Tokyo, Paris, France. A solo exhibition is forthcoming at Et al., San Francisco, CA.
