Towards is pleased to present Fables, an exhibition of recent works by Sarah Avolio.
Avolio’s paintings present a softened reality – domestic spaces and intimate moments seen through a slight blur. There is an elusive quality to the works – as if drawn from fragmented recollections and half formed memories – moments that exist just slightly out of reach. Through her dramatic cropping, Avolio creates a world that feels both at once familiar and foreign – luminous paintings imbued with a quiet tension, drawing us in and asking us what lies just below the surface.
Central to Avolio’s practice is a filtering of reality – a deeply intuitive understanding of what to let in, of what to direct our attention to, and ultimately, what to edit out. Through her paintings, she draws us into her world – distilling fleeting impressions and quiet moments into painterly scenes charged with feeling.
