Stowaway is pleased to present To heart / through stomach, a site-specific installation by New York based artists Perri Cohl Hofmann and Eliza Lu Doyle, running from February 24 to March 30. Composed of photography, installation, video, and text, the duo exhibition stages a single collaborative body of work, rather than two individual practices.
Emerging from a year of experimentation between Doyle and Hofmann (who initially met as graduate students at Rutgers Mason Gross School of the Arts in 2020), the exhibition orbits questions of queer embodiment, intimacy, injury, and physical interdependence, finding form in the un/ease of bodies moving toward/with/against one another. To create the images in the show, Hofmann and Doyle collaborated with the Rutgers University Women’s Wrestling Club, as well as with their 3-year-old pet axolotl, Pup.
Eliza Lu Doyle (she/they, b. 1993, based in New York) is an interdisciplinary artist working across video, writing, and performance. Doyle’s practice engages people in transient acts of fantasy, honing in on performances of care and injury that slip between the everyday and the spectacular. Her work has been presented by MoCA Arlington, the RISD Museum, Bushel Collective, Westbeth Gallery, All Street, Olympia Gallery, Wassaic Project, SAR Conference on Artistic Research, École Nationale d’Art (ENDA), La Infinita de l’Hospitalet, Anthology Film Archives, and Project Anywhere. Doyle holds a BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design (2016) and an MFA from Mason Gross School of the Arts, Rutgers University (2023). She currently teaches at Rutgers and in the New York State prison system, and is a 2023-24 BRIClab Video Art Resident.
Perri Cohl Hofmann (they/them, b. 1992, based in New York) is an artist working primarily with photography alongside collage, video, and installation. Their work questions and complicates photographic representations of queer and trans people while using image-making as a tool for embodiment. Hofmann grew up in New York City and received their BFA from New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts (2014) and their MFA from the Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University (2022). Their work has been shown at Aperture Gallery, Spring/Break, Westbeth, Bushel Collective, All Street, and featured in The New York Times. Their debut solo show was exhibited at TheBlanc Gallery in New York in Fall 2023. In addition to their art practice, they maintain a curatorial practice and teach at the International Center of Photography.
