For Beyond Poise I am Prey, Brooklyn based artist Micah Angelus has created a series of sculptures that invert the received notions of decoration and utility embedded in the natural building movement. Using cob (straw and clay) and wood-frame molds to create enlarged versions of the metal hinges necessary for accessing and closing built environments, Angelus simultaneously aestheticizes the structural components of green architecture and underscores the centrality of use. Produced in the Czech Republic (where the artist periodically works), these sculptures question the utilitarian pretensions of “green” consciousness and eco-building and create space for a more capacious conception of built environments—one that accounts for a far more ambivalent relation between human and non-human natures.
