fluent is pleased to present For More information, Mariana Silva’s first solo exhibition in Spain.
The installation is the outcome of a two-week writing residency focused on the textual basis of Silva’s ongoing projectFriends of Interpretable Objects (2013 – …). For this specific iteration of the project, the artist proposes a reading room and an environment that will host the beginning of an interview series the artist has developed for this purpose, and that will continue to expand in the form of a future publication.
Through a series of transparent inflatable cases and plinths conceived for the purpose, the reading room brings to the fore its display and text mediation to reflect on the surpluses and unaccounted blindspots of language and display that lead to the presence of objects in museums, their identification with the ambiguous notions of culture, access, or public property.
For more Informationtakes its title from an interview with Miguel Tamen under Silva’s ongoing project Friends of Interpretable Objectswhich shares its title with Tamen’s eponymous book (2001) and questions how the relationship between nature and culture is comprehended both in art and scientific contexts as well as the mechanisms framing the historical borders between objecthood and personhood.
Mariana Silva lives and works in New York. Previous exhibitions include The Zoomorphic Eye, Museu Calouste Gulbenkian (2018), The Annotated Friends of Interpretable Objects, Tensta Konsthall (2017); Audience Response Systems, Parkour Lisbon (2014); Environments, e-flux, New York; and P/p, Mews Project Space, London (both 2013) and Kunsthalle Lissabon(2011). Previous group exhibitions include The 8th Climate, Gwuangju Biennale (2016); Moscow Biennale (Russia, 2016), EDP Foundation (Lisbon, 2015), Astrup Fearnley Museum (Oslo, 2015) and Milton Keynes (2015). Mariana has been a resident artist at Gasworks, London (2016); Portuguese Cultural Centre, São Tomé and Principe (2012).
