Lova Ranung works in film and animation and is based in Stockholm. Her work highlights the complex relationships between human understanding of the natural world and the natural world this understanding is embedded in. She explores invasive and weed species, portraying them not as inherently good or bad but as forces of change and disturbance. She evokes science-fiction environments set in digital space, to think about the rapid changes in biodiversity and our attempts to understand and map them. Emphasizing instability as an ecological condition, Ranung draws inspiration from the invasive species such as Garden Lupin – an invasive plant in northern Europe that benefits some species while harming others – or the giant hogweed, introduced for its beauty but later despised for its harmful effects.
Ranung’s focus is on our attempts to conceptualise these shifting dynamics within our ecological reality, both through the histories of science and through the micro narratives that evolve around them.

I Will Keep You Right Here portrays a digital microcosm in which dust, dirt, and particles continuously divide. merge. and reorganize. The work imagines an ecosystem animated by an underlying bodily engine, a subtle internal pulse that shapes the movement and tempo of the landscape.
Breath acts as the central connective force: the rhythm of inhalation and exhalation binds pixels to particles. and particles to bodies both on and beyond the screen.
Resonance s a collaborative audiovisual work by Lova Ranung and Gizem Öz. The work combines animation and visual art by Lova Ranung with live music composition and performance by Gizem Öz, creating a dialogue between image and sound. It was originally created as a live performance for the Walking Life Festival, in Portugal. Rangun builds fantasies of bacteria and microworlds, combining oil painting textures with Rangun’s ongoing practice of digital animation. The work moves between the organic and the artificial, inviting the audience into a shifting and immersive landscape.
This Light Makes Your Plans Unclear is a looping video work that explores a breathing and unstable landscape shaped by light, perception, and spatial disorientation. A mountain lake functions as a threshold, suggesting an entry point into a larger intemal system where environment and body become interconnected. The work examines the agency and presence of landscape through a shifting, synthetic environment that oscillates between the natural and the constructed.
Through animation the piece investigates the merging of body and landscape, alongside questions of representation, otherness, and the construction of nature.
It Hurts to Walk Through Walls. It Makes You Sick, plays on the complex associations of the dandelion, a flower often categorized as a weed or considered invasive, and its shifting cultural and ecological status. The dandelion is a resilient plant, living relatively unaffected by human intervention, categorized as a weed, it moves freely and is defined by iys deep roots and drifting seeds. Its latin name, “Ruderalia” derives from ruder, meaning “ruin, referring to its tendency to grow in rubble or disturbed ground.
