Les Soirées de Paris is the title of a magazine launched in 1912 by Guillaume Apollinaire, André Salmon, André Billy, André Tudesq and René Dalize. At the origins of it, features the theft of the Mona Lisa by Vincenzo Perrugia in 1912, for which Apollinaire was suspected and even imprisoned one week in Paris. To comfort him, his friends, encouraged by journalist André Billy, suggested him to co-found the magazine. The title is chosen in ironic reference to the naturalists’ nights of Zola (Les Soirées de Médan). It contains creation texts, poetry, back pages, chronicles.
Writing, creating, publishing, producing heterogeneous works, with no academicism, as a form of testimonial or resistance to a context experienced as arbitrary, partial, at least widely imperfect: that is what linked the five friends. This is also what brings together the five artists of the show, around the capture of present time, in all its ambivalence, may it be photographic or sculptural. Most of the works displayed seize ritual signs, putting us on the track of manifesting a hidden reality, like epiphanies.
Fluctuating between cult and custom, the artists explore the spiritual, linguistic, and technologic transition that we experiment, even if we have no clue of our temporal position inside it.
Julien Carreyn (born in 1973, lives and works in Paris) in its new snapshots series, ii (2019), captures informal settings, which any precise identification is blurred by a work of modification of the photographic surface, producing then oniric trouble effects.
Doris Guo (born in 1992, lives and works in NY) who questions in her sculptures and installations familiar and religious rituals, presents Guestbook, a bronze sculpture miming a devoted superstition gesture.
The three works by Em Rooney (born in 1983, lives and works in NY) specifically produced for the show, which can be read as moons or crosses, suggest a priori ordinary scenes, therefore revealing the question of living/dying presence in our changing environment.
Hayley Silverman (born in 1986, lives and works in NY) whose work explores the artifacts of political and moral surveillance ruling our society, presents a specific series diverting religious iconography, Repatriation of the aura (2019).
Naoki Sutter-Shudo (born in 1990, lives and works in Paris and Los Angeles) conceives a series of intimate and conflictual sculptures, combining forms, colors, and narrative references which seemed to pre-exist to his works.
