Other Activities marks the third exhibition at the gallery by Lasse Schmidt Hansen. The exhibition presents a hanging of works which for the past few years have been shown in contexts outside of this gallery. While this initiative indicates a somewhat thematic or conceptual approach, the hanging presents itself as the opposite—the works are simply arranged together and evidently made by the same artist.
As some of the works are displayed either entirely or partially wrapped in its packaging from transportation, the works seem to allude to the productive conditions and logistics behind the exhibition. Therefore, one could arguably view the exhibition as a documentation of Schmidt Hansen’s practice and the labor that constitutes it, as much as a presentation of the actual works this practice bring about.
The majority of the works presented have been made specifically for, or been an essential part of previous exhibitions: For instance, the two large plinths in the show are recreations of identical plinths that was part of the architecture for an exhibition at Kunsthalle Wien, in which Schmidt Hansen participated.
Plinths, Plexiglas boxes, packaging material and other readymade objects all seem to imply a feeling of something recognizable, yet without establishing any clarification. A sense of reuse and repetition goes for the title as well, as Other Activities have been used as a title for exhibitions and artworks in the past.
Lasse Schmidt Hansen (born 1978 in Albertslund, lives and works in Berlin) studied at Städelschule, Frankfurt am Main and Funen Art Academy, Odense. Recent exhibitions include One and J.
