After her exhibition at the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, world-renowned sculptor June Crespo will open her latest solo exhibition at 1646 in The Hague on the 6th of September, including new work and new site-specifc installations.
June Crespo is a sculptor with a strong connection to everyday objects, the physical body and the spaces we inhabit. For her, these all become materials to work with, to think from.
In an intuitive way, she explores these materials’ physical qualities, what is visible as well as what we can’t see. The way they relate to each other and how they can be transformed into something else. Also their psychological qualities and what these new material arrangements evoke in us when we observe them.
A sense of transformation is an important aspect of the work. Changes in scale, materials, the perspective from which we look at something, as well as the act of connecting, become tools for changing the identity and our reading of things.
For the exhibition their weft, the grass the artist poetically explores the connection between our bodies and architecture, between our insides and the place we fnd ourselves in.
With this focus, the large interventions and sculptures in the exhibition could be seen as abstract architectural organs. Organs that push and pierce the walls are used as limits between what is inside and outside of them.
At the same time, by playing with contrasting sculptural qualities, such as weight and suspension, tension and release, the works embrace an experience of contradiction.
The new works presented at 1646 are part of our long-term collaboration with CA2M in Madrid and a continuation of the work shown at the exhibition They saw their house turning into felds in 2023.
About June Crespo
June Crespo (Pamplona, 1982) lives and works in Bilbao. She obtained her BFA from the Basque Country University (Bilbao) in 2005 and completed a two-year residency at De Ateliers (Amsterdam) in 2017. Her solo shows include Vascular (2024) at the Guggenheim Bilbao Museum; they saw their house turn into felds (2023) at CA2M, Madrid; Acts of Pulse (2022) at P420, Bologna; entre alguien y algo (2022) at CarrerasMugica, Bilbao; Am I an Object (2021) PA///KT (Amsterdam); Helmets (2020) Artium, Basque Museum-Center of Contemporary Art, Vitoria-Gasteiz; No Osso (2019) at Certain Lack of Coherence, Porto; Ser Dos (2017) and Cosa y tú (2015) at CarrerasMugica gallery in Bilbao. Recently her work has also been shown in groups such as: L´écorce (2023) at CRAC-Alsace; The Milk of Dreams (2022) at the Venice Biennale; Fata Morgana (2022) Jeu de Paume (Paris) and The Point of Sculpture (2021) at the Fundación Miró (Barcelona).
