‘Stretched across a white-walled room with grey concrete floors, a chiffon curtain billows from the wind of an open window. Past the window, leaves on a tree flutter in the wind. The curtain stretches from the ceiling to the floor and across the length of the room. Underneath the curtain, is a small, reflective strip on the tiled floor. The sun from the window and from a path leading to another room lights the space and the curtain.’
Using photography, sculpture, drawing, text, glass, video, and painting, Jason Hendrik Hansma explores the notions of the in-between, the liminal, and the nearly articulate. For Hansma, a photograph might be created over months, a glasswork’s borders might extend to the work’s installation in ‘pass-throughs’ such as hallways, doorways or windowsills. A curtain might slow down an exhibition’s motion, providing a soft cut, moved from a slight breeze from outside air. In Hansma’s work language (and the loss of language) play a key role in moving through the politics of aesthetics, to reconsider the means we use to locate ourselves through and with each other.
Exhibitions, performances, readings and screenings have been included at the Maison van Doesburg, Eyefilmmuseum, Ludwig Forum für Internationale Kunst, Contemporary Art Centre Vilnius, Centre Georges Pompidou, Parc Saint-Léger Centre d’art Contemporain, Hordaland Kunstsenter, Centre International d’art et du paysage de l’île de Vassivière, Center For Contemporary Art Futura, Jan van Eyck and De Appel among others.
Jason was born in Lahore Pakistan, 1988 and lives and works in Rotterdam, The Netherlands.
A Centre Cannot Hold will end with a small book of images, works in progress and a textual response by artist and curator Jo-ey Tang, published by Shimmer.
