Can objects be separated completely from their original function? Does a function exist for that matter? And for space? Could form act, not as an attempt of domination of matter, but as a new possibility for the object? Which are the affective relations that establish between objects? Do they need each other? Does invisible matter exist? Or dysfunctional objects? Can we think of the sound from the materiality of contact between surfaces?
we feel untied, but why? is an exhibition where its elements reappropriate the space through the materials and objects, giving also attention to areas that could be seen as the “spatial rests of the exhibition planning”. we feel untied, but why? suggests , as well, a possible significance to the space where the materiality of transit appears thanks to materials and objects which change their location or position, that alter the function for which they were created, that occupy residual zones or even go unnoticed despite their big dimensions.
Bio
The artistic practice of Ian Waelder (1993) explores urban materiality from the perspective of memory using the means available to him, from photography to sound, including text, painting and sculpture. It is also the practice of a collector applied to the experiential: an investigation of the traces and marks people leave on objects and on the material environment.
He lives in Frankfurt am Main, where he is currently studying at the Städelschule (Prof. Peter Fischli, Haegue Yang, Mark von Schlegell —Pure Fyction—).
Recent exhibitions include solos at The Finnish Museum of Photography (Helsinki), L21 (Palma and Madrid), LOCAL Arte Contemporáneo (Santiago de Chile), and two-person and group shows at Salón (Madrid), Bacelos (Madrid) Ana Mas Projects (Barcelona), Fabra i Coats (Barcelona) and La Casa Encendida (Madrid).
He’s the co-founder of Printer Fault Press next to Óscar Florit; an art publisher focused in limited editions and books by artists, that seeks the collaboration and exchange between artists, theorists, curators and others.
