Tag Team Studio is proud to present Halvor Rønning as this year’s Open Call artist. Rønning, who is a graduate of art schools in Bergen, Oslo and Vienna, works mainly with abstract painting and figurative drawing that he integrates and compiles with elements of visual popular culture. Stopwatch, Mayonnaise, Bible is Rønning’s most comprehensive solo exhibition to date, and it includes paintings, drawings and sculptures.
Rønning’s work reflects the different visual strategies that the advertising industry uses to seduce us. It often contains photographs from fashion magazines, characterized by deep colors, dramatic shadows and smooth, glassy surfaces, as well as yellow press ads with bright colors and dramatic headlines. The abstract elements that Rønning adds to the found material, alternates between mimicking, complementing and disrupting the figurative advertising images: He takes a position in which he both refutes and complies with the material he analyzes.
Halvor Rønning (1984) lives and works in Oslo. He is a graduate of Akademie der bildenden Künste Wien (2012-14), Oslo National Academy of the Arts (2008-11) and Bergen School of Art (2003-05). Recent exhibitions include ‘Jenny Say Qua’, Rogaland Art Center, Stavanger; ‘Maleriets Letthet’, Kunstnerforbundet, Oslo; ‘Playtime’, 9800 S Sepulveda Blvd, Los Angeles; ‘Ratatouille’, Shanaynay, Paris; ‘New Needs’, Haus Wittman, Etsdorf/ Kemp; ‘Les nouvelles nouvelles libertés, accesorios especiales’, La Salle de Bains, Lyon and ‘Europe, Europe’, Astrup Fearnley Museet, Oslo.
