Biennale für Freiburg is a new platform for contemporary art in Freiburg, The event formats and artworks developed for the Biennale, created through close collaboration between local actors and invited artists, explicitly reference the city and activate it as a field of ex-perimentation, Freiburg’s hidden stories are revealed, the unexpected is provoked, and moments of interchange and contact are made available, The Biennale’s multi-layered pro-gram presents contemporary art beyond institutional spaces, contextualizes local conditi-ons in tension with global issues, and offers new perspectives on the city.

The Biennale für Freiburg was founded in 2019 by the association “Perspektiven für Kunst in Freiburg e.V.” in response to the shutdown of the Freiburg branch of the Academy of Fine Arts Karlsruhe, and the ensuing questions about the role of contemporary art (education) in Freiburg, The Biennale expands Freiburg’s cultural and artistic life, encouraging the ongo-ing exchange between national and international artists, artistic contexts, and urban socie-ty.

The artistic director of the Biennale für Freiburg 3 is Lorena Juan.

Isabel Francos Hohmann is assistant curator.

Past editions were curated by Paula Kommoss [BfF2] and Leon Hösl [BfF1].
