Feuilleton is pleased to present an exhibition of work on paper by Los Angeles-based artist Ella Kruglyanskaya.

There might as well be a “Do Not #&%! Disturb” sign at the entrance of this exhibition, because these women are frantically trying to nap. Whether curled up on couches, in partial fetal position or possibly genuflecting, they seem to be on the verge of either sleep, or freaking out, or exploding into splendid farragos of color. As per usual with Kruglyanskaya, her formal method informs the content of the work, in that her mark making and over all paint spattered messiness reflect the anxiety of her subjects. Additionally, the collage-like incorporation of recycled fragments of cast offs speaks to the economy of confinement, of making do with what you have. Indeed, if these works evince the angst and disquiet of our current global crisis, it is due in part to being made in the middle of it. Characterized by a poignant ambivalence, they vacillate between protest and withdrawal, rage and resignation.
