Volcanic winter occurs after strong volcanic eruptions, when billions of tons of ash rise in the atmosphere. The volcanic winter that came in 536, according to scientists, was probably the result of the eruption of three volcanoes. As a result of the explosions, the average temperature in various places around the world, including in Europe, dropped by 1.5-2.5 degrees Celsius compared to the long-term norm. There was darkness and famine. It took decades for the situation to return to balance. It was the volcanic winter that caused the formation of the Slavic ethnic group in eastern and central Europe.

It is speculated that Munch’s famous painting “The Scream” was inspired by the red cloud of volcanic aerosol over Oslo resulting from the Awu eruption in 1892.
