SOYUZ is pleased to present “LOWBAKE”, the first exhibition in Italy for British artist Dominic Samsworth.
Samsworth will present a new body of work that he has developed in the studio over the last year while based in Northern Italy. Samsworth works with the mediums of painting, assemblage and installation. His shaped paintings hang and stand closely to the minimal designs and structures they are taken from, predominantly monochromatic and spray finished, in a range of industrial coatings, while his installations and sculpture are more domestically derived, materially raw and immersive.
LOWBAKE refers to UV paint curing, a common procedure in the auto body industry used to accelerate the finishing process . The works in the exhibition visually dissect and riff off the processes and material methods used in spray finishing and the aesthetics surrounding cosmetic car modification. “Prototype, masking-out, over-spray, custom pigments, vinyl wrapping , window tint, glare reduction and UV protection are all laid bare in a series of formal mis- representations”.
A new series of ‘wrapped works’ will be presented alongside two shaped canvas paintings with a floor based intervention, throughout the gallery intended to control and inform the environment surrounding the artworks. Samsworth combines a visual vocabulary of “cool school, finish fetish with low brow, lad mag, cosmetic car tuning culture”, in both protest and celebration of the chemical processes and environmental detriment involved in industrial productions.
Hand cut and built, wrapped and sprayed his works formalise a more general inquiry, reflecting a state of slow global temperature increase. Since graduating from the GSA painting department in 2010, Samsworth has worked and exhibited in several countries and spending periods on both official residencies and self initiated projects, London, New York , Cologne , Arbroath, Herefordshire, Miami, Los Angeles, Mexico City , the latest being in Lombardy , Italy . These periods of working entwined with physical cultural experiences feed directly back into the studio and bodies of work.
