Blind Spots is conceived as an exhibition featuring works by artists who are mostly connected to the gallery’s program, and whose pieces—despite their relevance—have been left out within the realm of private collecting. These works share a certain condition of invisibility, perhaps due to factors related to their installation, material fragility, thematic complexity, ineffectiveness within discursive frameworks, or contextual challenges.
The exhibition questions the notion of value within the art world by bringing visibility to works that, either at the time of their creation or more recently, did not receive sufficient interaction. Some of these pieces were produced in the early stages of the artists’ careers, during periods when their formal or conceptual explorations involved risks that did not always result in immediate validation or circulation.
At the same time, the functionality of these works within conventional frameworks of the art market and private collecting is called into question. Their difficulty in adapting to everyday spaces has often relegated them to a place of exclusion: the gallery’s storage or it’s assets. In this sense, Blind Spots operates not only as a gesture of rescue, but also as a critical reflection on the mechanisms of visibility, dissemination, and legitimization within the Contemporary Art idiosyncrasy.
During the exhibition, Joaquín García will lead a conversation with the gallerist and two private collectors to delve into some of the issues raised by the curatorial proposal. The conversation will address topics such as the criteria that shape a collection, the factors influencing the decision to acquire an art price, the relationship between gallerist and collector, as well as the limits of integrating artworks into the everyday space and the future of private collections.
