Tatjana Pieters is pleased to ‘Little Triumph’, Anneke Eussen’s 8th solo exhibition at the gallery. Pieters has been representing Eussen as early as 2006 after they met at the Higher Institute of Fine Arts, Belgium. Eussen went on to live & work in Berlin until 2016 and is currently living & working in the Netherlands..
Eussens extended body of work moves between architectural installations, objects and drawings. She is fascinated by the changing value and nature of what surrounds us and repurposes found objects & materials into new compositions. Eussen explores changing definitions of beauty and the fine balance between observation & judgment. According to Eussen, our systems of evaluation are always incomplete, since they are constantly transforming in accordance with how we perceive and experience life & society and what we leave behind. These questions have been a constant contemplation throughout her work.
During her stay in Berlin (2006-2016) Eussen started to experiment more with found ojects and materials. Many of them lost their function in a market driven consumption society. Eussen considers it a lack of imagintation to discart used materials. According to Eussen the power of the artistic process lies in the transition of materials. Transition leads to new viewpoints and as such inspires progress. It katalyses the constant evolution of our set of values.
Eussen presents a new series of glass works made of windows from construction and army vehiches that were stored for over 60 years, sometimes in combination with new glass. Eussen incorporated the traces of humidity, rain, dust and rust as unique signatures to every single surface, creating compositions in which time is of essence. The surface patterns reference the variety in patterns in marble stone, a medium Eussen has been working with on a regular basis. With the ‘Triumph’ series Eussen continues the use of discarted marble in her work. Using recycled parts from the former State Library in Berlin, this series references aspects of past glory.
With a minimal selection of actions Eussen brings a tension between materials, between controlled and uncontrolled action. The play with gravity lifts the objects to a whole new dimension. The repurposing of materials reshuffles their meaning, creating different perspectives on existence. Eussen considers the glass works as ‘Zeit-Zeichnungen’ (time drawings). Eussens work functions as a pause in a society full of tension, creating a heightened awareness for the present moment. Spirituality regains its power within the stillness of shape, colour and meaning.
