Almudena Lobera at CentroCentro, Madrid

Take Long Take (Secuencia Plano Secuencia in Spanish) is a site-specific exhibition by Almudena Lobera, conceived for the third floor of CentroCentro in Madrid. Inspired by the symmetrical, horseshoe-shaped architecture of the Palacio de Cibeles, the exhibition offers a mirrored journey, in which visitors move continuously through the space, much like a cinematic long take.

The exhibition explores dualities and repetition, using the unique architecture of the venue as a narrative device. A blue band at neck height runs throughout the entire floor, transforming the space into a metaphorical pool. This visual element connects all the rooms and recalls Lobera’s previous works on liminality and perception.

Themes such as visibility, dual identity, and the subconscious are present throughout the exhibition—from the video La Bellaventura, where palmistry intersects with beauty rituals, to sculptures like Falling and Floating, inspired by the tears of Lewis Carroll’s Alice. The materialization of sound also plays a key role, with the suspended installation Melancholy and Restraint, which visually echoes the song Teardrop by Massive Attack.

A tribute to David Lynch crowns the central space, where a split golden fish alludes to the dive into the depths of consciousness that every act of creation entails. Other works—including installations around the dispersion of light and drawings—further deepen Lobera’s exploration of what lies beneath the surface.

Although some of the pieces revisit recurring themes in Lobera’s practice, all were created specifically for this project, with the aim of constructing an immersive scenography that surprises the viewer and invites them to explore introspective states beyond the visible and the tangible.

Almudena Lobera (Madrid, 1984) is a visual artist with a BFA and MA from Universidad Complutense de Madrid and is a laureate of the Higher Institute for Fine Arts (HISK) in Ghent. She has participated in international residencies at institutions such as UCL Slade (London), Casa de Velázquez (Madrid), the Royal Academy of Spain (Rome), Tokyo Arts and Space, and CCA Andratx (Mallorca). Her work has been shown in solo and group exhibitions across Europe, the Americas, and Asia, including venues like CentroCentro Madrid, Tabacalera, Fundación Juan March, Museo de Arte Abstracto Español, The Bronx Museum of the Arts, and the 6th Moscow Biennale. She has received numerous awards and grants from Fundación BBVA, Fundación Ankaria, VEGAP, Fundación Montemadrid, and the Spanish Ministry of Culture. Among her solo shows, Take Long Take (2025), Stories (2020), and Technical Images (2020) stand out. Lobera’s practice explores the mechanisms of perception and their role in shaping visual and cultural systems. Through site-specific works, drawings, videos, and sculpture, she investigates how reality is constructed and mediated by language, narrative, and the act of seeing itself.
