– He can see no sign that he is joking. Or if it is a joke, it is a very deep joke.
SCHLOSS is pleased to present the first exhibition of the Brussels-based artist Agnes Moraux. For “Deep joke”, Moraux presents eleven new drawings.
Originally trained in law and history at Université Libre de Bruxelles, Moraux has in recent years developed a prolific drawing practice of which nothing has been exhibited, her imagery referencing both comics/pulp culture (Frank Frazetta) and the old masters (Dürer, Titian, Pisanello). For this show Moraux has excluded drawings of masks, 19th century cloaks, fights, daddydom, seascapes, Neanderthals and scissors to focus on a selection of birds, mostly waders or fowl.
“A bad drawing doesn’t destroy a good idea,” Moraux states. “Drawing is very fast and practical. I draw fowl. They are prone to gang rape. Meanwhile, the stork has long been viewed as a powerful symbol of birth and new life, most notably in the story of how babies come to be.”
Agnes Moraux (Norwegian and Belgian, b. 1992, Ostend, Belgium) studied history and law at Université Libre de Bruxelles. This is her first exhibition. Moraux lives and works in Brussels.
