Nan Goldin (b. 1953 in Washington D.C.) is one of the most important contemporary photographers. In 2023 she was at the top of the ArtReview Power 100 and in 2022 at number one in the “Monopol Top 100” ranking. In her sensitive snapshots, she portrays friends, family and herself in intimate moments. Goldin’s works tell of relationships, sexuality, everyday life and freedom and document addiction, violence and death. In doing so, she breaks taboos in a direct and unsparing way and provides insights into the reality of subcultures and marginalized groups, the consequences of the AIDS crisis or the opioid epidemic in the USA. She also acts as an activist and fought against the Sackler family’s pharmaceutical company with her group P.A.I.N.

Britta Rettberg is delighted to show a selection of photographs from different periods of the artist’s career, including a special series of works from the Markus Jans Collection..
