Afternoon Projects is pleased to present Rifts, hovels, a sighing tide, a solo exhibition by Montreal based artist Marlon Kroll. The artist mediates truth through his paintings, via ambiguous forms and allusive likenesses. The exhibition hinges on abstracted motifs of interior space to consider notions of safety, security, solitude, finality and quiet. In this exhibition, Marlon’s coloured pencil paintings become a meeting point, where this quiet interior world finds the viewer.
The sculptures on the wall, originally inspired by subway seats, are of his dog and mother, his two protectors, the later whom he believes visits him during his stay in Vancouver manifesting through passing seabirds. Watching and observing, they become the object of the gaze of others, rather than just the guardians.
Marlon Kroll is a German/Canadian artist living and working in Montreal. He holds a BFA in Ceramics from Concordia University and is one of nine laureates of the Darling Foundry’s 2019-2022 Montreal Studio Program. He was the 2020 recipient of the William and Meredith Saunderson Prize for Emerging Artists. He has shown his work in solo and group exhibitions, including at the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal and Cassandra Cassandra, Toronto (2020); Clint Roenisch, Toronto; Parisian Laundry and Galerie Antoine Ertaskiran, Montreal; Interstate Projects, Brooklyn (2019); Central Park, Los Angeles; Galerie René Blouin, Montreal; 8-Eleven, Toronto (2018); Soon.tw, Montreal (2017). In 2021, he will hold projects at Marvin Gardens/Best Western, Queens; Gern En Regalia, Brooklyn, NADA Miami and Afternoon Projects, Vancouver.
